Original Title:
Heart of England
This is a record of the many journeys by two individuals, covering an area within a radius of 25 miles of the Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham. The writer and illustrator expressed a completely individual response to each area visited, yet collaborated closely in their choice of what was considered beautiful and interesting. They found that the well-landscaped roads and motorways, which provide such speedy transport from the hustle of the towns to the delights of the country, have their own beauty. 15 miles by car from the centre of Birmingham or the depths of the industrial West Midlands (the old Black Country) brought them to the strong, fresh breezes of Barr Beacon or the Clent Hills, to the scent of pines on Connock Chose or to the long walks across the new country parks at Kinver Edge, Sandwell and Baggeridge. They explored the new city of Coventry, the old towns of Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bewdley and Bridgnorth. They walked through the villages, along the rivers and canal towpaths and they visited the open-air museums at Tipton, Bromsgrove and Hartlebury. This is a book full of enthusiasm and affection of the infinite variety in the heart of England the authors know so well, and one that will inspire readers to explore it for themselves.
